Is it about how well we look after our skin, or is it down to our genetic inheritance?

It’s well know that darker skin types offer more protection from the harmful effects of sunlight, and therefore age related changes such as wrinkles can occur at a slower rate in these lucky individuals.

However Olay carried out a study which shows that how you look after your skin and therefore factors within our control have far more importance as you get older, compared to any genetic influences.

Unsurprisingly the biggest factors were found to be sun exposure, smoking, and dry or dehydrated skin.

Here are a few things you can do to help prevent wrinkle formation and maintain those youthful looks;

  • Moisturising with hyaluronic acid which is your skin’s natural moisturiser will help to form a barrier over your skin and prevent water loss. That’s how the skin stays hydrated and this is particularly important at nighttime when water loss is at its peak.
  • We all know that eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, which are full of antioxidants, is an important source of nutrition for your skin. But applying an antioxidant serum eg one containing vitamin C, directly onto your face is even more effective in terms of protecting and repairing your skin from the damaging effects of UV light.
  • Using SPF every single day is the secret to ageless beauty. Ideally you should use a seperate SPF cream from your regular moisturiser, particularly in the summer months. A minimum of SPF 15-30 is recommended and the key is to remember to use it everyday, even when cloudy, because it’s the day to day UV exposure that causes over 80% of visible skin ageing.The iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 which is available to purchase at Cosmetic Doctor Clinic, is a lightweight moisturiser containing SPF 30 as well as essential anti-ageing ingredients such as vitamin E and DNA repairing enzymes.This is a great option for those who have limited time in the mornings and need a quick skincare routine.
  • For those who have more time to spend on their skincare routine, one of our best products is the iS Clinical Super Serum Advance containing a potent blend of vitamin C. This gentle and lightweight formula can be applied under make up and SPF, and we receive consistently great feedback for its effectiveness at treating pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. It’s worked wonders for my skin and is well worth the investment.
